Walk through the gates of this dignified yet heartrending memorial to discover a piece of Singapore history through the Kranji War Memorial, the Singapore State Cemetery and the Military Cemetery.
Within the Kranji War Memorial, the War Cemetery is the final resting place of over 4400 men and women from the Commonwealth forces who died in the line of duty during World War II. The names of over 24,000 war casualties are inscribed on the Singapore Memorial.
The Military Cemetery stretches along the western slope of Kranji Hill beside the War Cemetery and the Singapore State Cemetery houses two graves. One of the graves is for Inche Yusof bin Ishak, Singapore's first President who passed away on 23 November 1970, while the other grave is for Dr. Benjamin Henry Sheares, President Yusof Ishak’s successor who passed away on 12 May 1981. Curiously, no other departed Presidents have been buried here since.
