The Marina Barrage is a testament to Singapore’s continual efforts in maximizing our limited land resource. Conceptualized by our late founding father Mr Lee Kuan Yew, this barrage is not just any other dam. Due to scarce land, the barrage is built across the Marina Channel to form Singapore’s 15th reservoir, the Marina Reservoir. The initial seawater in the reservoir was naturally replaced with rainwater, with the barrage keeping the seawater out and freshwater in and maintaining a constant water level. Singapore has had her fair share of water rationing struggles in the past so this new source of freshwater supply is an added assurance.
This dam also controls the flooding in surrounding low-lying areas and allows for water-based activities such as kayaking, canoeing, etc. to be carried out year-round. Aside from all these functions, the barrage is a work of modern architecture and offers a spectacular view of Singapore’s city skyline. Located in the city centre, the barrage’s beautiful and tranquil environment is like an oasis amid the hustle and bustle of the city. The rooftop lawn of the barrage, named Green Roof, has also become a popular recreational spot for families and friends to have a picnic, chill out or fly a kite.
