As you walk along the urban shopping malls on Orchard Road, keep a lookout for the sudden appearance of two-storey shophouses at an alley – this is Emerald Hill. Take a walk inside Emerald Hill Road and you can feel the beat of time slow down as you take in the beauty of and splendour of the neighbourhood.
In the early 1900s, wealthy Chinese and Straits-Chinese traders resided here in Chinese Baroque and Art Deco styled terraces. Watch for grand entrance gates, ornate friezes, and wooden window shutters. Then there are the trendy bars at Peranakan Place where you can sip on some cool cocktails and people-watch.
